Diabetes Flashcards
What is the physiology of Type 1 diabetes?
The pancreas makes little or no insulin.
Insulin is a hormone the body uses to allow sugar (glucose) to enter cells to produce energy.
Type 1 diabetes causes the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood to become too high.
People need to take insulin every day to keep their blood glucose levels under control.
What is the physiology of Type 2 Diabetes?
It is high blood sugar levels due to the body not making enough insulin, or what it makes not working properly — known as insulin resistance.
Insulin helps glucose get into the cells to be used for energy. In type 2 diabetes, the body doesn’t make enough insulin or doesn’t use insulin well. Too much glucose then stays in the blood, and not enough reaches the cells.
What kind of disease is type 1 diabetes?
An autoimmune disease
What kind of disorder is type 2 diabetes?
A metabolic disorder
How is type 1 managed?
By taking insulin to regulate blood sugar levels
How is type 2 managed?
Through a healthy diet and lifestyle so that blood sugar levels are not too high.
