what happens to the body when someone has diabetes type 1
Body’s immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin
what happens when your insulin production decreases until no more is produced?
your glucose levels increase and this can seriously damage your body organs
what happens if type 1 is diagnosed?
have to take insulin injections for the rest of your life
what is the test for type 1 diabetes?
GP will do a urine test and might check your blood glucose levels
what are the symptoms for both types of diabetes?
feeling very thirsty
urinating more than usual
feeling very tired
losing weight without trying
what does type 2 diabetes cause?
a persons blood glucose level to become too high
what is insulin responsible for?
controlling the amount of glucose in the blood
what is the treatment for type 2
diabetes?
changes in diet
depending on response of your blood glucose levels sometimes tablets and insulin
early on planned weight loss can even reverse the disease
What problems does diabetes cause?
can cause serious long - term health problems
most common cause of vision loss and blindness in people of working age
also responsible for most cases of kidney failure and lower limb amputation
what is the main function of insulin?
to regulate the concentration of glucose in blood
what happens in the absence of insulin?
very little glucose is able to pass through cell membranes so the plasma levels of glucose rises
what does insulin promote?
the conversion of glucose into fat
what does insulin delay?
delays the conversion of amino acids into energy
