What is a maladaptive coping strategy?
When a person turns to a vice (smoking, gambling, alcohol etc) as way of getting away from a problem. Not addressing the core problem, as you would in constructive coping.

Self medicating: numbing yourself with drugs or alcohol
Ruminating about the past: spending a great deal of time thinking about past mistakes, pains, or problems
Isolation: Isolating yourself from others in order to avoid distressing situations
