Devlopment 2.4 Flashcards
What location factors affect development?
-Land fertility -Natural resources -latitude and longitude -Proximity to coastlines
Generally how fast do landlocked countries develop?
Slowly or slower
Will rural isolation slow a countries development?
Yes (to a degree)
What products are more valuable than primary products?
Service products Secondary products
How has Malawi’s location affected its development?
It has impaired its ability to develop itself.
How do high fertility and mortality rates affect a country?
They increase the ammunition to children in the populations and decrease the amount of working adults (as many of the children don’t make it to becoming an adult).
How has Malawi’s reliance on its rail network affected its trade?
It can’t export and/or import enough to gain money / support its economy with machinery.
How has rapid economic growth affected Malawi?
It has lead to a polluted capital with a lack of sanitation to support its people as money cannot be invested to support the population as it has to be invested in machinery.
How has pollution affected Malawi?
Carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are released into the atmosphere by the old (in poor condition) diesel lorries.
How has Malawi’s proximity to oceans affected its growth?
Its lack of ports or airports has cut off Malawi from the global market forcing it to get Mozambique to export its product on their freighters.
How has Malawi’s isolation affected its growth?
85% of Malawi’s population is rural this means that most people are isolated and have access to limited and poor infrastructure.
How does pollution affect Malawi’s water supply?
Rivers become contaminated with waste and bacteria causing an increased probability to contract a disease.
How does air pollution affect Malawi?
Industrial smoke and exhaust fumes reduce air quality making people more prone to respiratory infections.
How has global warming affected Malawi?
The rainy season has been shorter, rivers have dried and crops have failed. And when the rain does fall it destroys more than it helps to grow crops and floods houses.
How has a rapidly growing population affected Malawi?
A rapid population has decreased Malawi’s ability to develop as it has to provide for more people, squatter settlements have grown rapidly with no sanitation or waste management almost inviting disease in.
