Define impairment.
Any loss or abnormality of psychological, physiological or anatomical structure or function (e.g. paralysis of the legs).
Define disability.
Any restriction or lack of ability (resulting from impairment) to perform an activity in the manner or within the range considered normal for a human being (e.g. inability to walk).
Define handicap.
The impact of the impairment/disability on the person’s pursuit or achievement of the goals which are desired by him/her or expected of him/her by society (e.g. unable to work in a job that requires mobility).
How is disability now defined?
“Those with long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which in interaction with various barriers may hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others”.
Disability can occur at three levels. What are these?
- An impairment in body function or structure, such as a cataract which prevents the passage of light and sensing of form, shape, and size of visual stimuli.
- A limitation in activity, such as the inability to read or move around.
- A restriction in participation, such as exclusion from school.
The ICF classification has 2 parts, each with 2 components. What are these?

What is portage?
A home-visiting educational service for pre-school children with additional support needs and their families. It aims to equip parents with the skills and confidence they will need to help their child, no matter what the child’s difficulties may be. It offers practical help and ideas to encourage a child’s interests and make learning fun for all the family.
