What are the types of abuse?
Neglect (most frequent) Emotional (2nd most frequent) Physical Sexual Fabricated and induced illness
What is physical abuse?
Physical abuse is deliberately hurting a child causing injuries such as bruises, broken bones, burns or cuts.
What age are children at higher risk of physical abuse?
Younger than 4
Where are physical findings suspicious of non-accidental injury often found (on the body)? (5)
Face, neck, eyes, mouth, scalp Lower jaw and mastoid Ear Trunk (chest and abdomen) Buttocks/lower back
What is neglect?
Persistent failure to meet a child’s basic physical and/or psychological needs, likely to result in the serious impairment of the child’s health or development.
What is sexual abuse?
Forcing or enticing a child or young person to take part in sexual activities, including prostitution, whether or not the child is aware of what is happening.
How might children present that may indicate sexual abuse? (7)
Pregnancy STI Vaginal/Rectal bleeding Recurrent vulvo-‐vaginitis Dysuria/pain on passing urine/UTI Bed-wetting/soiling Behavioural problems/sexualised behaviour
What is the WHO definition of female genital mutilation?
All procedures involving partial or total removal of the female external genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs whether for cultural or other non-therapeutic reasons.
What is emotional abuse?
Persistent emotional ill-treatment of a child such as to cause severe and persistent adverse effects on the child’s emotional development.
What is radicalisation?
A process by which an individual or group comes to adopt increasingly extreme political, social, or religious ideals. It can be both violent and nonviolent.
