What is Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS)?
A condition that results from alcohol abuse by the mother during pregnancy.

Drinking alcohol during pregnancy.
What is a psychosomatic illness?
A sickness that involves both the body and the mind. It usually starts with emotional stress before causing physical illness.
How does gender based violence negatively impact women’s health?
They suffer from broken bones, fractured spines, burns, damaged eyes and head injuries, they are also more likely to get STIs and HIV/AIDS.
What problems does Foetal Alcohol Syndrome cause?
Problems with mental and physical Development as well as learning disabilities and physical deformities.
What illnesses can be caused by pollution?
Asthma and various cancers.
How can religion cause ill-health?
Some religions prevent their believers from taking medicines, having blood transfusions and seeing doctors.

What is wife inheritance?
A cultural practice that forces a widowed female to marry a male relative of her dead husband.
What is the culture of silence?
In some cultures it is taboo to speak about sex, incest, relationships between genders, HIV, matters of reproductive health and pregnancy.
What are arranged marriages?
Girls as young as 11 are married off to old men as fourth or fifth wives without their consent.
What is female genital mutilation and cutting?
The surgical removal of parts or all of the female genital organs.
What is circumcision?
The removal of the foreskin of the male penis.
What are the consequences of male child preference?
Gender based abortion, the murder of female babies at birth, malnutrition in girls and general neglect of female children.
What is dry sex?
Sex without lubrication which causes vaginal and uterine injuries which lead to scarring and higher infection rates.
What is nutritional harm?
Some cultures forbid certain foods, particularly for girls and pregnant women which prevents them from getting all the nutrients they need.
What are lifestyle diseases?
It is an illness that is linked to the way people live. A disease that could have been prevented with different lifestyle choices.

Heart disease, hypertension, STIs.
What is cancer?
A range of diseases in which abnormal cells increase and spread out of control.
What causes cervical cancer in women?
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection.
What is cervical cancer?
A cancer that forms in the tissues of the cervix, the organ connecting the uterus and the vagina.
Who is most vulnerable to lung cancer as a result of smoking?
Women.
What is prostate cancer?
Cancer in the male prostate gland that wraps around the urethra which is the tube that carries urine away from the body.
Name 3 symptoms of prostate cancer.
Delayed or slow start to urination, blood in the urine and semen, bone pain in the lower back and pelvic area.
What is hepatitis B?
A common liver infection which can lead to liver disease or liver cancer.
What does the liver do?
It is an organ that filters toxins out of the blood and makes substances that fight infections.
List 5 symptoms of hepatitis B.
tiredness, itchiness, no appetite, dark urine, jaundice (whites of the eyes turn yellow).
What is hypertension?
Very high blood pressure.
What are circulatory system diseases?
Abnormalities of the heart and vessel system.
What are cardiovascular diseases?
The group of diseases that involve the heart, blood vessels, arteries and veins.
What is tuberculosis (TB)?
An infectious disease caused by the Mycobacterium Tuberculosis bacterium.
How does TB spread?
It spreads through airborne infectious droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes or spits.
List 3 symptoms of TB?
A cough for two weeks or more; blood in the sputum; loss of appetite and weight.
What can happen if a pregnant woman is infected with an STI?
Miscarriage, premature birth, stillbirth, infant blindness and infant pneumonia.
