Development of Reproductive Tracts Flashcards
What is the Cloaca?
Common opening where the uro-genital and GI tract come together
What is the urogenital ridge?
Section of intermediate mesoderm where the embryonic kidney and gonads both come from
What are primordial germ cells?
Common origin of spermatoza and oocytes
Expression of which gene causes male characteristics to develop?
SRY gene
What are the altenate names for the Mesonephric and Paramesonephric ducts?
Wolffian & Mullerian
What happens to the 2 ducts in a normal male?
Mullerian inhibiting hormone suppresses duct development & androgens support mesonephric duct
What happens to the 2 ducts in a normal female?
No testes producing MIH so the pasamesonephric duct develops & no androgens produced so the mesonephric duct degenerates
What does the wolffian duct become?
Vas deferens and epididymis
Where does the paramesonephric duct come from?
Invaginations of the epithelium of the urogenital ridge
What structures form the uterus and vagina?
Paramesonephric duct forms the uterus and top of the vagina, ectoderm forms the rest of the vagina
How is the male and female external genitalia formed?
Male : fusion of genital folds to form urethra and genital tubercle becomes glands of penis. Female : No fusion
