Development of Face and Palate Flashcards
When does development of the face happen?
4-8 weeks in utero
When does formation of the palate happen?
6-10 weeks in utero
When is the earliest bone laid down in the skull?
6/7 weeks mandible
What are the pharygeal arches?
4/6 ridges that are precursors for parts of the face/skull
What develops from the 1st arch?
*hint - ear
trigeminal nerve
mom
malleus
incus
meckel’s cartilage
What are the 5 prominences?
Frontonasal
paired maxillary
paired mandibular
What do the paired prominences develop from?
1st pharyngeal arch
What does the frontonasal prominence develop from?
overlies developing forebrain
What processes form the intermaxillary process and what does this give rise to?
Medial nasal (frontonasal) processes form intermaxillary process - gives rise to philtrum of lip and primary palate
What do the maxillary prominences give rise to?
lateral palatal shelves (secondary palate)
Primary vs Secondary palate
Primary - Gives rise to the premaxilla bone and the anterior portion of the hard palate
Secondary - Gives rise to the majority of the hard palate and soft palate posterior to the incisive fossa
What is the frontonasal prominence?
forehead
Why is meckel’s cartilage important?
mandible forms around this cartiage (serves as a template that guides osstification process around it)
part of inner ear bone forms from this cartilage (malleus)
What is cleft lip due to?
failure of fusion between maxillary promience with the mesial nasial processes - can be unilateral or bilateral (extending to incisive foramen)
What is cleft palate due to?
failure of two palatal shelves to fuse in the midline
