Development Flashcards
Piagets’ theory
development is a consequence of maturation not just experience I.e nature and nurture.
all children go through the same recognisable stages, in all the same order at roughly the same age.
Childhood thinking is different in quality than adult thinking
What are the 4 stages in Piagets theory
Sensorimotor - 0-2 - lack of object permanence
pre operational - 2-7 - not yet logical or capable of performing mental tasks
Concrete operational - 7- 11 - logical operations, such as conservation, reversibility or classification, allowing logical reasoning
Formal operational - 11 and above - the ability to formulate hypotheses and systematically test them to arrive at an answer to a problem
What is a ‘fixed mindset’
People who believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits
What is a ‘Growth Mindsets’
People who believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work.
What is ’Object permanence’
The understanding that objects continue to exist even when they cannot be observed.
