Determining whether CHO, Fat or Amino Acid is used for ATP resynthesis during exercise Flashcards
What happens when you have low carb diet?
It causes OAA to be made by proteins instead.
Why are carbs preferred as exercise intensity increases?
- glycolysis works at a faster rate
- faster rate produces more lactate
- more lactate inhibits more lipolysis
- happens on site
What is lactate threshold?
Point where glycolytic processes in the cell are going faster than the oxidative processes. (overwhelms system)
What does lactic acid inhibit?
lipolysis
How does exercise duration impact the choice of substrate?
The longer the duration, the less carbs are used because the supply is running out. (decrease in muscle glycogen)
What is lipolysis?
Breakdown of free fatty acids and glycerol
Once muscle glycogen is exhausted, why does the blood glucose never reach zero?
The brain metabolism relies almost completely on blood glucose. When blood glucose levels reach a certain point, the brain starts to shut down the “competition”.
What is needed to use substrates?
Enzymes
Why cant untrained individuals use substrates the same as trained individuals?
Untrained individuals dont have enough enzymes.
How does the state of training influence carb utilization?
At the start of exercise untrained people use more carbs than trained. The untrained use the carbs more in glycolysis than in the oxidative sytem. (more glycolysis = more lactate = more inhibition of lipolysis)
