Determining water potential by measuring changes in mass - osmosis Flashcards
1
Q
What happens when 2 solutions of diff water potential are separated by a selectively permeable membrane?
A
Water will move into the solution with the lowest water potential
2
Q
What are examples of solutions in cells?
A
Cytoplasm + cell sap
3
Q
Explain 1st half of the method (prepping potato):
A
- Label six boiling tubes with 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1 M
- Put 30cm3 distilled water in first tube + same amount of salt solution in rest of tubes. Put a stopper on tube
- Use cork borer + scalpel to prep 6 potato cylinders of 50mm long
- Blot each cylinder dry
4
Q
Explain 2nd half of method: (experimenting)
A
- Record mass of each cylinder then put 1 in each tube
- Wait 45 mins then remove cylinders from their tubes, blotting them with filter paper
- Reweigh each cylinder + work out mass change
