- Fails as testing still increases USA: 1953-1962 – 268 tests, up to 385 in following 9 years, Ussr 218-157 so only partially successful
- Salt 1- 5 year freeze on missile construction – May 26th 1972
- Fails as both continue construction – usa 76000-10600. USSR – 2400-7500
- SALT2 – discussed June 1974
-signed by carter and Brezhnev on June 18,1979 – fails as us congress block bill due to soviet invasion of Afghanistan December 0f 1979

A
- USSR enquire the USA’s response to Sino soviet war – use state they will not let china be destroyed
- 1971- us allows china to replace Taiwan at the Un
- 21 February 1972- Nixon visits china and diplomatic relations begin between powers
- Causes détente ad alienate USSR from superpowers

Helsinki’s accords
A
• Peace meeting August 1st of 1975 – called the ‘new Yalta’, with UK, USA, Canada, and 33 other countries
• Agree on post war borders of Europe [ FRG AND GGR]
• Agree on future borders being changed peacefully
• USSR make weak agreements on human rights – is viewed as an diplomatic coup
• Ultimately fails with no long term policy to support it – seen now as irrelevant

• All act no policy or genuine movement towards peace
