• Doctrine outlined by Willy Brandt [leader of west Germany] in 1967 to improve relations with the Ussr and eastern Europe
• 1970 Moscow treaty- Secures borders of FGR and GGR – ensure Germany is now permanently in two, no risk of invasion / return to 1939 borders
• 1970 Warsaw treaty – confirms borders with Poland along Curzon line and odder Neisse line
• 1971 4 power treat – west Berliners can visit east more freely
• 1971 Prague treaty – borders with Prague
• Willy brant visits Warsaw ghetto to apologies for Germanys persecution in ww2 on Dec 17th 1970
• Overall mostly fails – very little long term policy toward peace, mostly restates previous agreements

• FRG and GDR recognize each other as different sates
• Leads them both to join un 18 September 1973.
Splits in NATO
- 1956 Hungarian uprising – European a county feel they wouldn’t be protected
- Development of icmbs - eg) August 21st 1957– smaller countries no longer needed by usa to house missiles,
- 25th march 1957 treaty of Rome – further allied divisions, form EEC
- The berlin ultimatum November 10th 1958- proves usa is willing to make concessions, adaneur moves closer to Charles de Gaulle
- The Vietnam war – is largely unpopular, usa seem brutal, weak and unfair – widely unpopular – Harold Wilson refuses to provide aid eg) usa crimes 300 killed my lai
- Causes détente as isolates usa – have less strong allied support, less motived to enter aggression
France
- Charles de Gaulle – is anti-English speaking/west
- 1963- rejects west berlin’s entry to the EEC because it is too American
- 1965 – aims to remove dollar from currency reserves to devalue it
- June 21, 1966 – France leaves nato. Natos hq was in Paris
- Visits USSR- voices how Europeans should free themselves from western block
- 14 December 1967 – hamel report by Belgian foreign ministers- presents the should pursue détente with Warsaw pact countries
