Design Of Pain Medications- 8 Flashcards
What are NSAID’s used to treat
Pain and Inflammation
What is the mechanism of action of NSAID’S
They act as non-selective reversible inhibitors of the enzyme cyclooxygenase.
They reduce levels of chemicals called prostaglandins involved in inflammation by blocking their synthesis from arachidonic acid by COX enzymes.
Chemical Structure and Mechanism of Action of Aspirin
Aspirin is one of the salicylates.
It irreversibly inhibits COX-1
This unique behaviour allows aspirin to inhibit platelet aggregation.
Chemical Structure and Mechanism of Action of Ibuprofen
It is a propionic acid derivative
It acts as a nonselective COX 1+2 inhibitor
Chemical structure and mechanism of action of diclofenac
Acetic acid derivative
It is a non-selective COX 1+2 inhibitor
Mechanism of action and examples of coxibs
Celecoxib
Parecoxib
Etoricoxib
Selective COX-2 inhibitors
