Descriptive Stats Flashcards
what are the three measures of tendency? (three M’s)
mean, mode and median
what is an advantage of using the mean?
more sensitive than the median because we can use all the values
what is a disadvantage of using the mean?
can be disrupted if there is an extreme value
what is an advantage of the median?
its is not effected by extreme values, therefore can give a more representative score
what is a disadvantage of the median?
it doesn’t take all the values into account, unlike the mean making it more sensitive
what is an advantage of using the mode?
it is useful when putting values into categories
what is a disadvantage of using the mode?
not useful describing data when there is multiple modes
when the mean, median and mode are similar it called a what type of distribution?
a normal distribution
what type of graph is used for showing a normal distribution?
histogram
what do measures of dispersion show?
how spread out data is
what are two ways we check for measures of dispersion?
range and standard deviation
what does standard deviation show?
shows how spread scores are from the mean
a high standard deviation means what?
shows there is a low consistency scores
a low standard deviation means what?
there is a high consistency with scores
what is the range?
the biggest value take away the smallest value
