Describing Minerals Flashcards
ideal conditions –>
perfect crystallization
Habit
crystal shape
terminations
crystal faces that close off crystal
prismatic faces
pinacoids, equal and opposite pairs of faces
subhedral
almost euhedral, not perfect
auhedral
cruved and linear edges, not original shape
crystals can grow in
cavaties, ex quatz in lava, geodes
special habit such as branching and dendrites
can indicate rapid grwoth, perserved in enevironment that doesnt rip or bend etc
Massive crystal
when its impossible to tell wether specimen is single anhedral or mass of anhedral crystals
Colour in Minerals
some colour producing elements
structural components or colour centers created colours
some transition metals responsible for colours
inclusions in minerals
inclusions can be other minerals or gas or liquid phases
smallest unit of crystal
smallest unit of a crystal is the unit cell, but always bigger than unit cell
smallest crystals formed from
iron oxides and clay minerals form smallest crystals
cryptocrystalline
cryptocrystalline: finely crystalline minerals
obsidian
formed glass, amorphous
