Shingles is the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (chickenpox)

Chickenpox (Varicella) and herpes zoster (shingles) are both caused by the same virus. The primary infection is called chickenpox (Varicella) & the reactivation of the infection is known as shingles (herpes zoster). After primary infection (chickenpox) the virus becomes a latent within a dermatone and is kept under control by the immune system.
