What advice would you give to someone with acne:
Not a disease or contagious
Not to pick at spots
Reduce sugar in diet
Don’t wash >2 times daily and use soap free
Warn initial therapy may take up to 8 weeks to work
What is the bacteria in acne vulgaris?
propionbacterium
Builds up in the pilosebaceous gland
What is the causes to psoriasis, what important investigations should be done with someone presenting with psoriasis and what is the management?
Causes:
- genetic
- Stress
- Step infection (guttate)
- Scarring (Keobner)
- Drugs (NSAIDs, lithium, beta blockers)
- Pregnancy
Investigations: - LFTs - HbA1c - Lipids \+ - BP
Management:
- topical steroids + vitamin D analogues (Dovobet or Enstilar)
- coal tar
2nd line:
- UVB
- PUVA
- Methotrexate
- Ciclosporin
3rd line:
- Ustekinumab
What is the grading used for skin pigmentation i.e. white to black?
Fitzpatrick score
What are some risk factors for skin cancer?
Low Fitzpatrick score
- fair skin
UV exposure
- lots of holiday abroad
- use of beds
Previous skin burns
Immunosuppression medication
Previous skin cancer
Multiple benign moles
What is the major signs that a skin lesion is cancerous?
change in size
Change in shape and irregularity
Irregular colour
What is the most common cause of skin cancer in UK?
Basal cell carcinoma
- Rodent ulcer
