Herpes Zoster
Pain generally precedes skin manifestation 3-5 days, and localised to the dermatome that will be affected
Malaise, fever, headache often present
Initial rash consists of erythematous maculopapules situated on a single dermatome
DDx from herpes simplex – usually only a single patch of equally sized vesicles
Vesicles subsequently become umbilicated, form crusts and generally fall off after 3 weeks; scarring
Pain during and after rash is significant
Secondary infections (staph)
Regional lymphadenopathy
Trigeminal nerve can cause painful ear, vesicles on pinna and external auditory canal (Ramsay Hunt Syndrome)
Atopic eczema signs and symptoms
Dry skin, child scratches, breaks epidermal barriers, infection
Dietary allergens can cause outbreak if sensitive to them
Seborrheic dermatitis has similar features, but appears on the scalp , with more scaling, looks yellow and greasy, “cradle cap”, early infancy
Erythema Multiforme signs and symptoms
Long, tender red patches over the shins may accompany infection or inflammation
Usually resolve by themselves
May also occur secondary to drug sensitivity
Appear in crops, and are accompanied by:
fever, arthralgia and malaise
Common infectious agents are strep and mycoplasma
Impetigo signs and symptoms
Golden crusts – caused by staph or strep
Rapid spread by auto-inoculation caused by scratching and rubbing highly contagious
Herpes Simplex
Can cause febrile illness in a minority with gingivostomatitis
Painful ulceration of buccal mucosa with erosion and haemorrhage
Dehydration may occur d/t difficulty swallowing – may also have thick secretions in the mouth
Treat severe cases with aciclovir
could sours around mouth
Rubella signs and symptoms
Mostly asymptomatic, but can cause serious complications is a pregnant mother contracts the virus
Associated Symptoms
Headache
Fever
Cough
Sneezing & runny nose
Sore Throat
Sore red eyes
Roseola Infantum
Very Common infection that mainly affects babies & toddlers.
Symptoms:
High Temp & rash
- Rash starts on the stomach / chest usually.
- Non itchy
Usually recover within a week.
