Dermatologic Viruses Flashcards
Which virus mimics FMD?
Vesicular Stomatitis Virus
Mucosal vesicles & ulcers; vesicles on udder/coronary band
Pathogenesis & transmission of Vesicular stomatitis virus?
Pathogenesis
- infects epithelium -> cytolytic effects -> spreads to draining LNs, but NO viremia // systemic effects!
Transmission
- sand flies, black flies; direct contact
- horses, cattles pigs
- North & Central America; northern regions of South America
Virulent factors of FMD?
Non-Enveloped (more resistant to extreme pH, temperature, drugs)
Virus = Aphthovirus, small ssRNA virus
Transmission routes of FMD?
Animal movement
Pathogenesis of FMD?
- 1º infection via inhalation/ ingestion, inseminationof infectious particles -> viremia -> 2º replication in epitelium cells
- virus shed in secretions before onset of clinical signs - persist in the oropharynx
- horizontal transmission only
What signs do all vesicular diseases produce in animals?
Fever w/ vesicles -> progress to erosions in mouth, nares, muzzle, teats, feet
Which species are amplifying hosts and mainenance hosts of FMD?
What 3 viruses cause epidermal proliferation?
- Canine Distemper Virus (hyperkeratosis of nose & footpads)
- Papilloma Virus
- Pox Virus
VF & pathogenesis of papilloma virus?
VF = Non-enveloped
Pathogenesis = Virus replicates in nuceli of basal cells of host’s epithelium -> proliferative warts -> spontaneously regress after weeks-months w/ development of cell-mediated immunity
What causes equine sarcoids?
Bovine papillomaviruses 1 & 2 (fibropapillomas)
- Fibroblastic skin tumors
- Most common neoplasms of equine, 1-6 y/o
Lesion locations, signalment and characteristics of Canine Oral Papillomas
Lesions: oropharyngeal region (can also occur on conjunctiva, eyelids, muzzle)
Common in young dogs
Spontaneously regress in months
Possible sequela of Canine Cutaneous Exophytic and Inverted Papilloma caused by CfPV-2?
Chronic lesions can lead to squamous cell carcinoma
Where do pox viruses replicate?
In the cytoplasm
Lesions of pox viruses
Transmission of Pox viruses?
Aerosol, Direct Contact, Mechanical (insects)
