Canine & Feline Otitis Flashcards
Masses/tumors, immunosuppression, humid environment, floppy ears and inappropriate ear cleaning are what type of factor of otitis externa?
Predisposing factors
Allergies/atopy by parasites, food and contact allergies are what type of factors of otitis externa?
Primary factors
Bacterial, yeast (malassezia) and fungal infections, medication reactions, and over-cleaning of the ear are what type of factors of otitis externa?
Secondary factors
2º = contribute to an already abnormal ear
What are perpetuating factors of otitis externa? Examples?
Perpetuating factors arise as the result of inflammation and tissue respone to otitis externa. These factors interfere with resolution of the inciting condition.
- Inflammation: leads to erythema, soft tissue swelling, and hyperplasia of epithelia and glandular structures of the external ear canal (pre tympanic membrane) -> stenosis
- Lateral epithelial migration of stratum corneum (aka ear wax) is impaired and builds up -> encourages bacteria and yeast overgrowth infections
Pros of doing Video Otoscopy examination?
- illumination, magnification
- documentation purposes (recordings)
What causes 50% of otitis externa in cats?
Ear mites (otodectes cynotis)
Which otitis infection are you most likely to see ipsilateral head tilt and rotary nystagmus?
Otitis interna
Shaking, scratching, bad odor are usually indicative of which type of otitis?
otitis externa
Horner’s Syndrome is associated with which type of otitis?
Otitis media
What diagnostic technique is ideal for Otitis Media?
CT/MRI (when non-responsive to meds)
When is surgery treatment indicated?
cases not responding to steroids, are chronically painful, and stenotic ear canals
Sx = total ear canal ablation and bulla osteotomy
Most common sign of ototoxicity? Which drugs are more ototoxic than others?
Hearing loss!
Epiotic, ketaconazole, other ear cleanser; use saline or water if concered about ear drum integrity
Ototoxicity can occur with ANY topical ear cleaner/medication!
