Q

What are perpetuating factors of otitis externa? Examples?

A

Perpetuating factors arise as the result of inflammation and tissue respone to otitis externa. These factors interfere with resolution of the inciting condition.

  • Inflammation: leads to erythema, soft tissue swelling, and hyperplasia of epithelia and glandular structures of the external ear canal (pre tympanic membrane) -> stenosis
  • Lateral epithelial migration of stratum corneum (aka ear wax) is impaired and builds up -> encourages bacteria and yeast overgrowth infections
