Resistance mechanisms of the skin
Physical barrier, low pH sebaceous fluid, fatty acids, antimicrobial peptides, normal flora
What is impetigo?
Superficial, crusting epidermal skin infection. Honey-colored crust
What are the two ways impetigo can present
Bullous and non-bullous
Who gets impetigo mostly?
Kids
What is the most affected site of impetigo?
Face
Which bug(s) cause(s) impetigo?
Staph aureus, Strep pyogenes
Which skin condition is pictured?
Impetigo
What is eysipelas?
Streptococcal infection of superficial dermis. Sharply demarcated, raised borders.
Which disease is pictured?
Erysipelas. Not sharply demarcated, raised borders
What is cellulitis?
Infection of deeper dermis (deeper than erysipelas) and subcutaneous tissue.
Poorly demarcated borders
Which bug causes cellulitis (the vast majority, anyway)?
Strep
