levels of depression
- mild
- major or clinical (also called a disorder)
mild depression
- a bit discouraged or blue
- feelings have been around for days or weeks but they come and go
- feelings tied to specific situation(s)
- not happy about the way your life is going
- hopeful about the future but not enjoying your life right now
- no difficulty with sleep or appetite
- no significant weight gain or loss
- fairly good energy, motivation & interest
- concentration is not impaired
- moods are not causing significant problems in relationships or at work
relationship between biochemistry & depression
- depression affects the limbic system of the brain (the center of emotions)
- key cells are less able to produce serotonin, norepinephrine & dopamine - responsible for maintaining a positive mood and optimistic outlook
states of bipolarism
- a state of depression
- a state of normality
- manic state
symptoms of bipolar mania
- beliefs of possessing exaggerated power, importance, knowledge, or ability
- decreased need for sheep
- more talkative than usual; pressure to keep talking
- rapidly changing, unrelated, or racing thoughts
- easily distracted
- driven behavior (at work, at school or sexually); agitation
- risky behavior (eg, excessive spending, foolish business investments)

- it is in the patient’s best interests that a different standard of care be practiced that includes treatment of the body, soul, and/or spirit in every case, without neglecting the patient’s social context
- all professionals providing care must become better allies in the healing process
- depression is a whole-person disorder that is best treated by a cooperative multi-disciplinary team of caregivers

I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall. I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me.
