waking at least 2 hours before normal/expected time
insomnia is split into three categories, what are they?
Initial- trouble getting to sleep
Middle- wakenign multiple times during night
Latent- early morning awakening
depression is almost always accompanied by what other mental disorder?
anxiety
what is dysthymia?
chronic persistent low grade depression
people tend to be able to wrok but low mood +/- sleep distrubances
when someone with dysthmia experiences an episode of major depression on top of this what is this calleed?
‘double depression’
what are the general criteria fro depression?
episode lasting >2weeks
no hypomanic/manic episodes
what are the three core features of depresion?

what are some additional (somatic) features of depresison?
loss of confidence

suicidal behaviour
inability to concentrate
psychomotor activity /retardation
sleep distrubance
change in appetite
how do you asses risk in someone with suicidal thoughts?
always ask- have they ever taken any action to end their life? normalise it by saying this happens to other people and other people have felt that way.
how is depression graded?
mild to moderate to severe
how is moderate depression diagnosed?
2 core + 4 additional (6 total)
how is severe depression diagnosed?
all 3 core + 5 additional (8 total)

what are the two subtypes of depression?
psychotic

who tends to get cotards?
elderly- nihilistic delusions ‘can’t eat becasue my bowels have turned to dust’
how might somone with psychotic depression think?
