Dentine and Pulp Flashcards
what is the bulk of the tooth formed by?
dentine
does enamel or dentine have greater compressive and tensile strength?
dentine
what makes dentine permeable?
it contains tubules
apart from tubules what does else does dentine contain?
cell processes
what is the content of dentine?
hydroxyapatite (70%), water (10%) and organic matrix (20%)
what are the different types of tubular dentine?
intertubular dentine and peritubular/intratubular dentine
what is primary curvature of dentine
when the tubules are tightly packed and close together
what is secondary curvature of dentine?
the tubules are less tightly packed
what do dentinal tubules contain?
odontoblast process, unmyelinated nerve terminals, dendritic cells, dentinal fluid or extracellular fluid from pulp
where is the outer dentine?
nearer the ADJ (amelo-dentinal junction)
where is the inner dentine?
nearer the pulp
what are the cells in the pulp?
odontoblasts, fibroblasts and defence cells
what are the extracellular components?
fibres (collagen and oxytalan) and matrix (proteoglycans, chondroitin sulphate and dermatan sulphate)
what are the types of nerves in the pulp?
sensory; autonomic (sympathetic)
what does the dental pulp contain?
cells, extracellular components, nerves, blood vessels, lymphatics
