Dental X-ray Equipment Flashcards
What year were federal guidelines regarding diagnostic equipment standards (for dental x-ray units) established?
1974
What does the federal government regulate regarding dental x-ray units?
-manufacture
-installation
What do state and local governments regulate regarding dental x-ray units?
-usage of equipment
-radiation safety codes
-equipment registration
How does equipment inspection in the PA work?
-regulated by the PA department of Environmental Protection (DEP)
-periodic inspections and monitoring every 3-4 years
Describe portable dental units
-battery powered, portable handheld x-ray for use in nursing homes, private care facilities, in home care, etc
-approved by FDA *not in all states
-has lead acrylic disk shield to reduce backscatter radiation
Describe the tubehead
-contains the x-ray tube
-produces the dental x-ray
Describe the PID
-position-indicating device (cone)
-round or rectangular
-restricts size of the x-ray beam
Describe the extension arm
-suspends x-ray tubehead
-houses electrical wires
-allows movement/alignment of tubehead and PID
Describe the control panel
-has exposure time indicator
-receptor type button
-exposure button
-*we do not change any setting on the control panel except exposure time (adult or child)
What are beam alignment devices?
film or imaging plate holders with a rod to aid in the alignment of receptor to PID, as well as an aiming ring
What are collimators?
a device that is put onto the end of a standard PID to further restrict the size of the x-ray beam and limit radiation exposure
What is the exposure time for an adult VS a child
adult- 0.1
child- 0.064
