Dental caries Flashcards
Gingivitis
Redness and swelling of the gingival tissues
Periodontitis
Inflammation and either rapid(aggressive, generalized) or slower (chronic) destruction of the tissues supporting the tooth.
Glucosyltranferase
Used by oral bacteria to colonize and adhere to structures. Mutations in enzyme prevents colonization of bacteria.
Transferred from mother to infant
Gram-positive coccus
Enamel smooth surface caries
S. mutans
Enamel pits and fissures carires
S. mutans and lactobacilli
Dentin caries
Lactobacilli
Root caries
Various Actinomyces
Sucrose metabolism from S. mutans
Creates long strand polymers (dextran) of sucrose molecules and allows bacteria to stick to gelatinous substrate.
Surface protein antigens S. mutans
SA I/II, P1. Creates fuzzy coat and allows for adhesion.
Polysaccharides-type specific antigens of S. mutans
Bind glucosyltransferase (GTF) to cell surface. GTF target for vaccine. Antibodies against prevent binding to GTF and prohibit caries formation
Gingival Crevice
Contains lymphocytes, macrophages, PMN.
Low titers of Parotide sIgA (PsIgA)
Low titers corresponds with increase dental caries. PsIgA recognizes all major serogroups of S. mutans. Blocks adhesion of S. mutans to provide caries resistance.
