A narrow band of tissue that connects two structures

Difference between hard and soft palate?
Hard - palate separates the nasal cavity above the oral cavity below
Tightly bound to underlying bone
Soft palate - moveable posterior third of the palate, no bony support and hangs in the pharynx behind it
What is the palatine rugae?
Irregular folds and ridges, detects texture
What is palatine raphe?
Midline ridge of the hard palate
Where is the incisive papilla located?
Behind the central incisors
3 areas of the tongue
Top of tongue - dorsum
Bottom - ventral
Tip of tongue - apex
4 taste buds and location
Sweet - tip
Salt - anterior sides and tip
Sour - at the sides toward the posterior
Bitter - in the center of the dorsum
Fungiform and filiform papillae?
Fungi - where the tastebuds are located
Filiform - cover the entire tongue, sense of touch but don’t contain tastebuds
What is the purpose of the epiglottis?
Passageway for food
