Stage 1 demographic transition
High birth and death rate, stable or slow increase
- heavily weighted at bottom
Stage 2 transition:
High birth rate, death rate falls rapidly, very natural rapid increase

Stage 3 transition
Death rate slowly decreasing, birth rate falling as well, increase in population slows down
- base pyramid narrower, top wider
Stage 4 transition
Low death and birth rate, population more or less stable
- base narrower, top wider
