Demographic Transition Model Flashcards
Human Geography 4.2
Strengths of DTM
Have flexible timescales
Simple to Understand
Applies well to most countries
Successful in predicting changes
Useful to compare countries
Weakness of DTM
Less relevant to low income countries
Euro Centric- expects countries to follow model for same reasons.
Fails to consider MIGRATION and GOVERNMENT POLICY.
Rural-Urban differences NOT considered.
Issues of a Youthful Population
in LEDCS (Uganda)
Uganda: Healthcare -can be a shortage of midwives and hospitals.
Education: Shortage of primary/secondary schools 50% of children not educated .
Unemployment
Infant mortality is high
What is Malthusian Theory? Thomas Malthus born 1798
“population is determined by food availability”
Give 2 limitations of the DMT
Additionally, there are limitations of the demographic transition model – things the DTM cannot reveal: the impact of other demographic variables such as migration, are not considered, nor does the model predict how long a country will be in each stage.
