Politics
is the science based on the competition and struggle for resources to deal with societal challenges by balancing causes, effects and measures.
The state
is the legal authority having a monopoly over the territory and controls which societal issues need to be addressed to prevent failures
The market
competes with others rather than having a monopoly based on price mechanisms to satisfy individuals
The community
trust and coordination to improve and understand social capital
What is a Big Society?
focuses on bottom-up ideas to satisfy citizens’ needs
What are policies?
means and instruments to tackle wicked problems in a desired way
(rules and regulations)
What is public policy?
gives directions on how to achieve public goods (through international collective action) with a selection of means and instruments

Government vs Governance
government refers to the control and steering of actions within a territory
governance is based on interactions, networks and coordination among multiple actors.
what depends governments’ capacity on?
it depends on the ability to mobilise and combine resources in a strucutred way
4 Types of Policies
- Constitutional: establishes organisational operations (ministry of immigration)
- Regulatory: controls activities through norms (COVID)
- Provisional: creates specific facilities (education)
- Redistributive: resource allocation (taxes)
