Definitions - Enzymes Flashcards
What is activation energy?
The amount of energy required for a chemical reaction to occur
What are catalysts?
Substances that bring a chemical reaction without being changed themselves
What are substrates?
A substance is what an enzyme acts upon
What is the active site?
The regions on the surface of an enzyme that fits the substrate
What is a product?
The substance formed from the substrate at the end of a chemical reaction with an enzyme
What are enzymes?
Proteins that speed up the chemical reaction
What is an enzyme-substrate complex?
A complex formed from a substrate bound to active site of an enzyme
What is the Lock and Key hypothesis?
A mechanism proposed to explain the binding between the active site of an enzyme and substrate. Just like only one key can open a lock, only one type of enzyme can speed up a specific reaction.
What does Optimum mean?
The conditions that produce the best results possible
What does denatured mean?
The state of a protein when it’s shape has been altered it can no longer carry out its function.
