Food
Medically, any substance the body can take in and assimilate that will allow it to stay alive and to grow.
*but there is more to food than nutrition
Diet
The food that is usually consumed.
Often ‘socially accepted’ by the culture.
Adequate Diet
Meets all of the nutritional needs of an individual
Nutrients
Biochemical components (usually from food) that are indispensable to the body’s functioning.
Nutrition
The study of how the body utilizes nutrients in food.
Nutritional Status
The health condition of an individual as influenced by their intake & utilization of nutrients.
Determined from the correlation of info gathered from physical, biochemical, clinical and dietary studies.
Malnutrition
Any condition caused by:
- too much or too little of a particular nutrient
- imbalance of nutrients
- not enough calories
Empty Calories
Term used to describe foods that provide only energy and no nutrients
