Definitions Flashcards
Airfoil
The shape of an object (such as an airplane wing) which when moved to the air produces left
AFT
Back part of the aircraft
Bulkhead
A wall or partition of the aircraft
Commissary
All service equipment and supplies boarded in the passenger cabin
Cabin
Passenger seating section
Deadhead
Crew travelling either on airline or ground transportation at the companies request or direction
Deplane or disembark
Term used to denote passengers leaving aircraft
Enplane
Term used to denote passengers boarding on aircraft
Enroute
A portion of the trip after takeoff and prior to landing
Ferry
A flight to transfer an aircraft from one station to another usually no passengers are carried on the crew
Flight alternate
An alternate airport in event the weather at the station is on favourable or mechanical
Headwind
Wind blowing against the forward movement of the aircraft slows it’s groundspeed
Inboard
Direction towards the centre of the aircraft fuselage
Intermediate stop
Any city where the flight stops between it’s origination and termination point
Layover
Time spent between flights at another city other than homebase
Locator number
A combination of letters and numbers given to passengers by reservation agent when booking reservation is in locating passengers flight number reservation date etc. in the computer
Ramp
Area on which the aircraft is parked at the terminal for the loading and unloading
Tailwind
Wind blowing with the forward movement of the aircraft increases its groundspeed
Turn around
The scheduled parings of two flights that return flight attendants to home base on the same date of departure
Aileron
Thin flat metal devices located on the outbound trailing edge of each wing. They move up or down to cause the aircraft willing to go up or down
Anti-collision lights
Revolving red light. This light rotates 90 times per minute giving a rapidly flashing signal to alert ground personnel that the engines are being started in the aircraft is preparing to move.
Fuselage
The main streamlined body of the aircraft within which passengers and crew are carried.
Rudder
I thin flat metal device attached to the trailing edge of the vertical stabilizer. The rudder moves to the left and to the right to make the nose of the airplane go left or right.
Aileron
Thin flat metal devices located on the outbound trailing edge of each wing. The ailerons move up or down to cause the aircraft wing to go up or down.
Anti-collision lights
Revolving red light. This light rotates 90 times per minute giving a rapidly flashing signal to alert ground personnel that the engines are being started in the aircraft is preparing to move.
Anti-skid breaks
Wheel brakes, including devices that sense the sudden decrease in wheel rotation which precedes a skid and releases the brakes momentarily to prevent skidding.
Elevators
Thin moveable or hinged flat metal devices on the trailing edge of the horizontal stabilizer used to control climb or descent
Fuselage
The main streamlined body of the aircraft within which passengers and crew are carried
Galley
The kitchen/buffet area of the aircraft
Ground spoilers
Devices on the upper inboard wing surface which when raised after landing spoil the lift on the wings
Horizontal stabilizer
Fixed appendage located either side of the fuselage on the top of the tail to stabilize the aircraft [looks like small wings] the elevators are on the trailing edge of the horizontal stabilizer
Nacelle
The cone shaped metal covering the houses the engines. Main covering of engine.
Leading edge
The forward edge of a wing or tail surface
Rudder
A thin flat metal device attached to the trailing edge of the vertical stabilizer. The rudder moves to the left and to the right to make the nose of the airplane go left or right.
Roll spoilers
Sections that rise with the respective aileron [Right or left] on the upper outboard wing surface to increased lateral control by spoiling the lift of the wing.
Trailing edge
The rear edge of a wing or tail surface
Undercarriage
Landing gear
Vertical stabilizer
Fixed appendage in a vertical position on tail of the plane to stabilize the aircraft [the rudder is the trailing edge of the vertical stabilizer]
UPK
Universal precaution kit
Stacking
A/C circling waiting for it’s turn to come in for a landing
