Parts of the highway

A

Platform: Made up of the carriageway and the hard shoulder.

Carriageway: Area reserved for vehicle traffic and divided into lanes.

Lane: Longitudinal lines the carriageway is divided into. May or may not be defined by road markings. Narrow Lane 3m or less

Central Reservation: Area not intended for the movement of traffic. Separates the different platforms

Hard Shoulder: A consolidated area adjacent to the carriageway that may or may not be paved. Automobiles are only permitted to use it in exceptional circumstances.
