defense mechanisms of gingiva Flashcards
the defense mechanism of the gingiva consists of what 3 things
gingival architecture, gingival crevicular fluid, saliva
the supragingival fiber apparatus consists of…
dento gingival, dentoperiosteal, alveolo-gingival, circular and semicircular, transeptal fibers
supragingival fiber apparatus has alot of what? and what type of collagens?
fibroblasts, type 1 and 2
supragingival fibers are a dense framework that provide what characteristic to the gingiva?
ridigity
what does the supragingival fiber apparatus provde?
control of tooth positioning and biostability
vascular network under the gingival epithelium consists of
lots of capillary loops( ascending arterial, descending venoous)
does this vascular network increase in density with age?
yes, although vessels with active blood flow decrease with age
wheres the gingival plexus?
lateral to junctional epithelium, its full of anastamones
what does the gingival plexus have alot of?
postcapillary venules which have alot of inflammatory mediators which cause adhesion, emigration of neutrophils, mononuclear cells, into the inflammatory infiltrate and junctional epithelium
junctional epithelium
firmly attached to the tooth, has hgih cell turnover rate which remvoes adhering bacteria
gingival crevicular fluid (GCF)
healthy gingiva= little/no GCF, level rises with inflammation.
what does GCF do?
flushes bacteria colonies away from sulcus
composition of GCF
cellular elements
electrolytes
organic compounds
GCF flow factors
gradual increase from 6am-10pm, female sex hormones increase flow chewing and vigorous gingival brushing smoking increases flow, some drugs( tetracyclines, metronidazole)
saliva maintains the oral tissues _______state
physiologic
what are the 3 major saliva glads
parotid, submandibular, sublingual
what are the saliva minor glands?
lingual bccal, labial, palatine
paratid secretion type
serous, thin watery solution
sublingual secretion type
mucous, viscous solution
submandibular secretion type
mixed serous and mucous secretion
minor salivary gland secretion type
mostly serous
what is whole saliva?
additive sum of the components from individual glandular secretions
what are non salivary components of saliva?
food debris, blood, crevicular fluid, oral bacterial products, desquamated oral mucosal cells
saliva composition
onle 1% is made of ions and organic compounds, rest is water
what immunoglobulins are in saliva?
IgA, IgM, IgG
saliva functions
protect, soft tissue repair, maintain pH maintenance of tooth integrity, inhibit bacterial attachment
