Displacement
Place unwanted/unpleasant feelings onto someone less threatening or an innocent bystander.
Projection
Taking your emotions and placing it onto others who do not have these emotions
Introjection
To place someone’s feelings, characteristics, or traits into yourself
Projective Identification
Seen in Borderline Personality Disorder
Someone who identifies others as having “their” feelings, however, they do not show those feelings.
Splitting
Clients with Borderline Personality Disorder identify a person as either all good or all bad
Rationalization
Making excuses or justifying actions to avoid unwanted feelings
Denial
Refusing to acknowledge the truth or facts
Repression/Suppression
Putting painful thought and memories away and forgetting them
Sublimation
A healthy redirection of an emotion
Ex: you release anger through kickboxing
Reaction-Formation
Turn painful feelings into the opposing
Ex: a person has a sudden loss shows a happy mood
Undoing
Taking back unwanted behaviors with praises or gifts
Isolation of Affect
Expressing no emotions when confornted with difficult events. No emotions during a crisis
