Community Organization: Key Concepts
A. NOT DIRECT Practice-THIS IS INDIRECT PRACTICE
B. Social Work role is to “Work WITH THE COMMUNITY” NOT DIRECTLY FOR THEM
C. Identify members with a “Common Interest.” Key words: CONSENSUS and AGREEMENTS
D. Does “not provide individual counseling” or family counseling
E. EMPOWER community MEMBERS to “strengthen their” community to “prevent future dilemmas”!
F. ADVOCATE as needed for the DISAVANTAGED!
4 Models of Community Organization-
1. Locality Development:
- Purpose: Work with community to “solve a common problem at the community/local level.” Think Neighborhood.
- Social Worker’s Role-ENABLER: “E” for EMPOWER. Helps members “use own resources to problem solve.” -Broker: Mediates and Negotiates between community groups-“links community with services.”
- Key words: Neighborhood Association, residents, community, school, and community mental health clinic

2. Social Planning:
Purpose: Determine a “range of solutions to problems and Develop Programs to solve problems.”
- Social Worker’s Role-Expert: Gather “Data and Facts” used to “resolve problems.”
- Key words: PLAN or DEVELOP homeless shelters, after school recreation programs, and develop programs.

3. Social Action:
Purpose: Assist community members who NEEDED “assistance”/ the DISADVANTAGED. You will take action and CONFRONT on their behalf.
- Social Worker’s Role-ADVOCATE: Represent the disadvantaged and ACTIVIST: “Bargaining and confrontation.”
- Key words: Landlord and tenants, the Homeless, and TENANT ASSOCIATION.

4. Social Reform:
Purpose: “Change Social Policy.” Form COALITIONS. “Bring organizations together”
- Social Worker’s Role-ORGANIZER: Join groups “together” to take joint action toward “specific goals.”
- Key words: Changing Laws and Bringing Large coalitions together.
- Ex: Bring Mothers AGAINST Drunk Driving (MADD) AND FATHER AGAINST DRUNK DRIVING (FADD) together.
