Deep Time Flashcards
What is deep time?
The immense span of geologic time
What are the laws of relative age?
Law of original horizontality Law of superposition Law of original continuity Law of cross cutting Law of inclusions
What is uniformitarianism?
Physical processes observed today are the same throughout history.
What is the law of continuity?
Flat rock layers are unlikely to have been disturbed
What is the law of superposition?
The youngest layer is on top and the oldest on bottom
What is the law of cross cutting?
Younger fractures e.g. faults and dikes must be younger than country rock
Why is the law of inclusions?
Similar to xenoliths inclusions are older than material.
How do fossils help in dating?
As time markers
What are the three types of unconfirmities?
Angular unconformity
Nonconformity
Disconformity
What is an unconformity?
Igneous or metamorphic rock overlain by sedimentary strata
What is the parent isotope?
The isotope that decays to form the daughter isotope
What are the 4 eons?
Phanerozoic
Proterozoic
Archean
Hadean
When was the Phanerozoic eon?
542 million years ago to present
When was the Proterozoic eon?
2.5 billion to 542 million years ago
When was the Archean eon?
3.8 to 2.5 billion years ago
