Chapter 4- Igneous Rocks Flashcards
How do igneous rocks form?
By the cooling if magma and crystallization
What is the temperature range of magma?
700 to 1300 degrees Celsius
What are the three components of magma?
Melt crystals and volatiles(gases)
What are the typical crystals in igneous rocks?
Feldspars, pyroxenes, olivine, biotite, quartz, and magnetite
What are the volatiles in magma?
Water vapor, carbon dioxide, and sulfur dioxide
What is a xenolith?
A price of country rock that was not assimilated into magma before it cooled.
What are the two ways that magma intrudes into other rocks?
As tabular bodies(dikes sills)
As balloon shaped blobs
Which is larger dikes and sills or Plutons?
Plutons, dikes and sills tend to be smaller
What is the difference between a dike and a sill?
Sills are horizontal an dikes are vertical
What is the country rock?
The native rock that is invaded by an intrusion
What is a laccolith?
Mushroom shaped intrusion
