Deck 4 Skeletal System- Functions Flashcards
What are the 8 fuctions of the skeletal system?
Support
Portection
Attachment?
Soursce of blood cell production
Store of minerals
Leverage
Weight bearing
Reduces friction across a joint
How does the skeletal system provide support?
Your bones give you shape and provide the supporting framework for the soft tissue of your body
How does the skeletal system provide protection?
Bones surround and protect vital organs. Pelvis protects reproductive organs, cranium protects your brain
How does the skeletal system provide attachment?
Your skeleton provides a surface for muscle attachment. Tendons attach muscles to bone. Muscles contract and pull on bones
How is the skeletal system a source of blood cell production?
Blood vessels feed the centre of your bone, and stored within is bone marrow. This continually produces red and white blood cells
How is the skeletal system a store of minerals?
Bones hold minerals such as calcium and phosphorus, essential for bone growth and health. These minerals are released into the blood
How does the skeletal system provide leverage?
The bones provide a lever system against which muscles contract, and pull to create movement
Descrive the function of the skeletal sytem - weight bearing?
Bones are strong to support your weight. Large forces are applied to your body and your skeleton is strong to prevent injury
How does the skeletal system reduce friction across a joint?
The skeleton has many different types of joint; synovial joints secrete fluid that prevents bones rubbing together, reducing friction
Provide a sporting example for each function?
Support - gynmastics on the beam to perform a routine
Portection - Rugby in a scrum/tackle
Attachment - To throw a javalin
Source of blood cell production - Marathon running
Store of minerals - triathlon
Leverage - pole vault
Weight bearing - weight lifter
Reduces friction across a joint - swimming
