DECK 11 Flashcards
Regulated by federal government agencies in conjunction with local law enforcement agencies.
Hazardous Waste Disposal
Protected Health Information (PHI)
Includes: medical record, payment history
5 Steps in the Cleaning & Decontamination process
Steps in this process:
- Sorting
- Pre-cleaning
- Transportation
- Disassembly
- Decontamination (cleaning & disinfection)
Disinfection process
Consist of two types: Manual & automated
Each process consist of a minimum of pre-soaking, cleaning, rinsing, and drying.
3 Types of Mechanical Cleaning
Ultrasonic, Impingement, Chemical mechanical processing
Uses high frequency sound waves that produce a series of implosions called cavitation.
Ultrasonic Cleaning
Spray forced cleaning action
Impingement Cleaning
Utilizing peracetic acid to clean to render the items “high-level disinfected”, but not sterile.
Chemical mechanical processing cleaning
Used to disinfect medical equipment that cannot be subjected to steam sterilization, especially heat-sensitive, optical devices such as scopes that typically require high-level disinfection between patient uses.
Glutaraldehyde- based agents
A process where all forms of microbial life are completely destroyed.
Sterilization
Steam or dry heat used
Most common practice in healthcare because recognized as safest, most practical form of sterilization
Thermal sterilization
Gas used as sterilization agent
Items sterilized require proper aeration before use
Sterilization process highly regulated
Ethylene oxide sterilization (EtO)
Uses a high concentration of hydrogen peroxide gas plasma to sterilize items.
Has limitations in lumen lengths, diameters, & material compatibility of products to be sterilized
Hydrogen peroxide gas plasma sterilization
3 types of sterilization equipment monitoring
Mechanical, Chemical, & Biological
Uses gauges, graphs, & printouts; gives time & temperature information.
Mechanical monitoring
The use of certain types of tapes & indicators; Indicators only show that items were exposed to heat & not that item is sterile;
Commonly used indicators are autoclave tapes, steam strips, & peel pouches w/ built in indicators;
Reacts to several parameters of sterilization rather than just one.
Chemical monitoring
A live spore inside a sealed tube that is placed inside sterilizer at most challenging position & then checked to ensure live spore where killed in sterilization process.
Biological monitoring
6 Categories of Waste
- Non-hazardous, general solid waste
- Hazardous waste
- Cytotoxic waste
- Infectious waste
- Physical hazardous waste
- Radioactive hazardous waste
Preferred Methods for treating or disposing infectious waste
- Incineration: high heat burning of waste;
- Off-site disposal: transporting materials to processing plant prior to transport to landfill;
- Microwave: Uses to dispose of certain wastes;
- Chemical: neutralizes the waste at the point of use
Minimal Linen Selection Requirements
- Size (cut & finish)
- Fiber contents (cotton blend 50/50 or 65/35 polyester cotton blends)
- Thread Counts (how dense the fiber? Thread counts 130, 140, 200 or above. The higher the count the more comfortable , but also more expensive)
- Color (includes investigating dying process & color steadfastness)
Quality ( how many times washed before needing to be replaced)
