Death Demography Flashcards
Death rate
Number of deaths per thousand of the population per year
The death rate started to fall from 1870 and continued to fall until 1930.
It roast from 1930-1950 due to the economic depression and ww2
But since 1959 it has declined
Reasons for the decline on the death rates
Infectious disease
Infectious disease
Infectious disease as the cause of death. These diseases affect adults and the elderly more so than the young.Reason for the decline in the death rates
Tanter 1996 - over three quarters of the decline in the death rate from the 1850-1970 was due to the fall in infectious diseases that were often responsible for the death of the young
By the 1950s disease of affluence such as heart disease and cancer replaced I
Improved nutrition
Mckeown 1972 - improved nutrition accounts for up to half the reduction of deaths, particularly for TB
Improved nutrition helped build resistance to infectious and strengthens immune systems
Evaluation
However some of infectious disease rose during improved nutrition such as measles
Medical improvements
After 1950s improved medical knowledge, techniques and organisation did he,on reduce deaths per thousand rates
More recently improved medication (antibiotics, blood transfusions and medical procedures such as bypass surgery and other developments have reduced deaths from heart disease by 1/3
People ar e health conscious
Decline in the number of people smoking has resulted in the declines in the death rate as people are more health conscious
Harper argues that people still engage in unhealthy behaviour, for example the smoking epidemic has been replaces with the obesity epidemic
He argues that a long life span is achieved through the use of costly medication
Public health measures
In the. 20th century, more effective central and local government with the necessary lower to pass and enforce laws led to a range of improvements in public health and quality of the environment
These unckded improvements in housing (producing drier, better, ventilated, less overcrowded accommodation p) clear air acts, purer water and laws to combat the adulteration of food and drink
Other social changes
The decline of more dangerous manual occupations such as mining
Smaller families reduced the rate of transmission of infection
Greater public knowledge of the causes of illness
High incomes, allowing for a healthier lifestyle
However the death rate has increased!!
