Ageism, is the result of structured dependency- the old are excluded from paid work by the government and employers which forced them to be economically lpdelendant on their families on the state
Old people are labelled as dependant and vulnerable

They argue that piezoelectric now have greater life choice regardless of age
Unlike, in modern society, consumption not production becomes the key to out identities
Hunt (2005) - we nit define our self’s by what we consume, this man’s we can choose our own lifestyle spchoices and identity’s age no longer determines who we are or how we live our lives - fillers Botox
What can the old now consume
The old become a market for a vast range of body maintained or rejuvenation gods and services in order to sell them new, young identities
Breaking down ageist stereotypes in postmodernity
Being able to consume plastic surgery, anti ageing products gym equipments enables ageist stereotypes from modern society to break down - old people can do what young people do
Anti- ageing products enable the old to rewrite their identities the way they want to be seen
Media images now portray positive aspects of the lifestyles of the elderly
Curtsies of the postmodernist view
Pilcher (1995) - postmodernists underestimate the importance of social class and gender and how these I)lack the experience of o,d age
They also ignore that older people face discrimatjin that limits their choices. Age concern. (2004) found that more people report suffering age discrimination than other forms of discrimination
