DE Theories2 Flashcards
6 Characteristics of independent study systems
(Wedemeyer, 1981)
- Student and teacher are separated
- Processes of teaching and learning are carried out in writing or another medium
- Teaching is individualized
- Learning takes place through student’s activity
- Learning is made convenient
- Learner takes responsibility for the pace of his progress
The fullest range of possible degrees of structure, dialogue, and autonomy in environments where teacher and learner are separate
Transaction Distance (Moore 1970s)
2 elements in DE that can be measured
- Dialog: 2-way communication - some systems allow for greater amounts than others
- Structure: extent to which a program is responsive to the needs of individual learners - some programs are very structured while others are very responsive
Due to gap in DE, students must accept a high degree of responsibility for learning
Learner autonomy
2 classifications of DE programs based on learner autonomy
by Moore (2013)
1 Autonomous - learner determined
2 Non-autonomous - teacher determined
DE could be analyzed by comparing it w/ the industrial production of goods
Theory of Industrialization of Teaching
(Otto Peters)
Theory which explains the relation between the feelings of belonging and cooperation to teaching effectiveness
Theory of Interaction and Communication/
Guided Didactic Conversation
(Holmberg 1985)
Autonomy is measured by variables of ________
learner control
Structure is quantified by ________
instructor control
in education varies for individual learners depending on their readiness for autonomy and need for structure
Distance
Structure and transactional distance may be at the beginning of a course as the instructor sets the agenda and the nature of discipline of learners.
high
broad paradigmatic set of assumptions that provides the elements of the theory but without the detail and completeness (nuances) of a comprehensive theory.
Theoretical framework
less abstract form of a theory and represents structural relationships among the key concepts. Lacks the richness of explanation of a theory.
Model
the building blocks of a theory and evolve from ideas generated from direct experience.
Concepts
identifies six distinct dimensions of freedom—or independence: time, place, pace, content, medium, and access (Lower levels of freedom correspond to greater levels of teacher control)
hexagon of cooperative freedoms model
(Morten Paulsen 1993)
