DE Theories Flashcards
6 characteristics of guided didactic conversation (Holmberg 1983)
- Easily accessible presentations, clear, using colloquial language, easily readable, moderate density of information
- Explicit advice and suggestions of what to do and what to avoid, what to pay attention to and consider
- Invitations to an exchange of views
- Attempts to involve the student emotionally
- Personal style
- Demarcation of changes of themes
Type of DE theory which attempts to describe essential traits of good distance education and thus represent an understanding of its basic character
Descriptive Theory
Type of DE theory which suggests procedures effective in facilitating learning
Prescriptive Theory
DE theory which suggests procedures effective in facilitating learning
Prescriptive Theory
3 types of interaction which DE educators have to agree on
(Moore 1989)
- learner-content interaction,
- learner-instructor interaction and
- learner-learner interaction
Theoretical model which defined quality educational experience as consisting of social, cognitive, and teaching presence
Community of Inquiry model (CoI) by Anderson
Theory which extends Moore’s model to include the three dyads of teacher–teacher, teacher–content, and content–content interactions
Anderson’s Modes of Interaction (2003)
2 Thesis of Anderson’s Equivalency Theorem (2003)
- Thesis 1. Deep and meaningful formal learning is supported as long as one of the three forms of interactions (i.e., student–teacher, student–student, and student–content) is at a high level.
- Thesis 2. High levels of more than one of these three modes likely provide a more satisfying educational experience, although these experiences may not be as cost- nor time-effective as those using less interactive learning sequences.
reciprocal events that require at least two objects and two actions. mutually influence one another
Interaction (Wagner 1994)
the essential characteristic of interaction “is _________ in actions and responses in an infinite variety of relationships”
Reciprocity (Simpson & Galbo, 1986)
refers to the currently more limited communication between humans and machines
Interactivity (Wagner 1994)
value of another person’s _________, usually gained through interaction,
perspective (Anderson, 2003)
value of another person’s _________, usually gained through interaction,
perspective (Anderson, 2003)
7 elements of the Andragogical Process
(Simonson et al 2019)
- Establishment of a climate conducive to adult learning
- Creation of an organizational structure for participatory learning (e.g. planning groups)
- The diagnosis of needs by differentiating felt from ascribed needs
- The formulation of directions for learning - includes objectives with terminal behaviors achieved and directions for improvement of abilities
- The development of a design for activities - clarifying resources and strategies to accomplish objectives
- The development of a plan providing evidence of the accomplishment of objectives
- The use of quantitative and qualitative evaluation for the rediagnosis of learning needs
7 Characteristics needed in DE systems designed for adults
- Environment of an online video based classroom where participants are able to see and not just hear what is occurring
- Environment where respect and dignity are promoted
- Adult learners must feel supported by providing clear ground rules for criticism in discussions and presentations
- The needs and interests of the adult learner should be the starting point of a course
- Course plans should have clear course descriptions, learning objectives, resources and timelines
- General to specific patterns of content presentation
- Active participation by use of work groups or study teams
