Day 3: The Protestant Reformation Flashcards
When was the Protestant Revolution?
1517 - 1648
What was the Protestant Revolution about?
Christianity, how popes and other high religious figures were abusing their power, and how the people would rise up to stop it.
Who was Martin Luther?
Martin Luther was studying in college. He was studying for law school, and was going to become a lawyer, but one day, he was in a huge storm. He said to himself, God, if you let me live this storm, I will cancel my law career and become a monk. He survived the storm, but most importantly, he kept his promise. He had learned so much about the bible when he decided to go to Greece, but that’s when he found out how corrupt the popes and other high figures of the Christian Church were. He later wrote a list of complaints called the 95 theses and this sparked a revolution against the corrupt people.
Who wrote the 95 Theses?
Martin Luther
What were the 95 Theses?
The 95 Theses were a list of complaints that Martin Luther had for the Catholic Church. He nailed the list to the door to the church in Wittenberg, Germany on Oct. 31, 1517.
What was the Catholic Reformation?
The Catholic Reformation was started by the Catholic Church officials to act as a counter to the Protestant Reformation. They created the Council of Trent, which was held in Trent, Italy, to reform the Catholic Church beliefs. The people there took many steps to suppress the Protestant Reformation like burning their books and effectively creating “church courts”, also know as inquisitions, to brutally punish anyone who was considered a heretic, which means someone who believes in anything other than church teachings.
What were indulgences?
Indulgences were tickets to buy your way into heaven. You could buy an indulgence from the church, and then they would forgive you of your sins.
