AED
A device that assesses a patients heartbeat and apply an electrical shock when necessary
Artificial breathing
An emergency procedure that forces air into the lungs of so,done who has stopped breathing
CPR
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation. An emergency procedure used to keep blood and oxygen flowing to vital organs during cardiac arrest
Chest compressions
An emergency procedure that artificially restores circulation when there is no pulse
Finger sweep
An emergency procedure used on an unconscious adult to clear an obstructed airway. An attempt made to remove the object by carefully sweeping the finger around the inside of the victims mouth and back of the throat
Grand mal seizure
A type of seizure characterized by a loss of consciousness and jerky muscle contractions
Heimlich maneuver
An emergency procedure involving the use of abdominal thrusts on a person who is choking in order to clear the obstructed airway
Petit mal
A type of seizure characterized by a loss of awareness for a short period of time, often less than a minute
Respiratory arrest
The stoppage of breathing
Seizure
Sudden violent contractions or trembling of muscles caused by a disturbance of brain activity; also called convulsions
Shock
The body’s response to a strong sudden disturbance marked by rapid weak pulse shallow rapid respiration pale cool clammy skin and lowered BP
