Major cause of death and disability globally
What are barriers to physical activity?
Time
Inconvenience
Lack of self- motivation

How many METS are used to sustain your body?
1.5 and less
Is sedentary behaviour different from physical inactivity?
Yes. Sedentary is sitting for long periods of time
Detrimental effects on health different from physical inactivity
Why is muscle contraction necessary for health?
Increase lipoprotein lipase activity and increases glucose uptake
Oxidizes more fat and decreases fat storages
Less glucose in blood stream and more chance of diabetes
Opposite of this if you are sedentary
What occurs to bones if you are more sedentary?
Increase bone resorption -> osteoporosis
Does blood pressure increase or decrease from excessive sedentary time?
Increase = hypertension
Are you safe from negative sedentary health consequences if you meet the 150 minutes of mod to vig?
No. Excessive sedentary time is independent of the positive effect of meeting the guidelines
How often should you be breaking up sedentary time?
Every 20 minutes get up for 2 minutes
